After several initial sessions, client and therapist agree to meet regularly for sessions, which may be face-to-face or online. These sessions are typically 50 minutes long.
The session is a personal, private space where the client can speak at will and the therapist will pay attention to what she or she is communicating, giving feedback and making connexions with the client’s life experiences. The way the client feels about the therapy and therapist also gives valuable insight into relationships and ways of being in a wider context. An important part of the work carried out in the session is finding the words to describe and so construct one’s own story and experience and then use this to understand present issues in a more coherent way. The therapist connects with the client’s emotions to connect with what is beyond conscious knowledge.
